Where Was It?

Privacy policy

Where Was It? keeps your game on your device. Here is exactly what data is involved.

Who we are

Where Was It? is a free daily geography game run by Nicolas Meuwly, based in Switzerland. For any privacy question, write to info@wherewasit.app.

What we collect

There are no accounts. We never ask for your name, email address or any other identifying detail.

Your game progress (guesses, scores, streak and statistics) is kept only in your browser's local storage, on your device. To score a round, your browser sends us the point you picked on the globe; it is not linked to you and we do not store it.

Our hosting provider, Vercel Inc., processes technical data such as your IP address and request logs to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. These logs are kept for a short period only.

Audience measurement

We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages are popular. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. Visitors are told apart only by a hash of the request that is discarded every day, so we cannot recognise you from one day to the next or follow you across other sites.

We also use Vercel Speed Insights to measure how fast pages load (Core Web Vitals) on real devices. It sets no cookies either and collects only anonymous performance data, such as load timings and the type of device and browser.

Third-party content

Place photos are loaded from Wikimedia Commons and map tiles from OpenFreeMap. Like any website, these services receive your IP address when your browser fetches them.

Your rights

Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (nFADP) and, for visitors in the EU and EEA, the GDPR, you can ask for access to, correction or deletion of any personal data we hold about you, and object to its processing. Clearing your browser's data for this site deletes your game progress.

To exercise these rights, write to info@wherewasit.app. You may also complain to the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) or to the data protection authority of your country.

Changes

If what we collect changes, we will update this page and its date.
